Oedipus Research Paper Essay Example for Free
Oedipus Research Paper Essay Aristotle has long been recognized for his contributions to many areas of society, from math and science to literature. It is claimed that Aristotle was racist, sexist and homophobic and that these views colored the way he saw the world (Engle, 2008). From some of these views, the tragic hero emerges. There are several key components to a Oedipushaving a tragic hero. The first is that the main character (protagonist) must be of noble birth or a member of a royal family. In addition to being of noble lineage, the protagonist must suffer from a fatal or tragic flaw. This flaw is not necessary a morale flaw, but rather a flaw that occurs as a consequence of oneââ¬â¢s choices or actions. A tragic hero will evolve the feelings of pity or fear and cause the reader and audience to identify with the main character. And, finally, the audience or reader must experience ââ¬Å"Catharsisâ⬠. Catharsis is a feeling of relieve that the main character had his come-uppance and was brought down. It is not a feeling of depression or sadness over the fate of the nobleman. Kennedy (pages 856-858). To elaborate, the nobleman must be of high estate that gives him a place of dignity. The fall from this dignity makes the event seem more of a calamity in that it involves more than just the main character. A fall that affects an entire nation or people is often the result of a noblemanââ¬â¢s fall. The main character is certainly no superman; he is fallible and has a weakness of character that leads to his end. Kennedy (pages 856-858) According to Aristotle, the ideal tragic hero is defined as: ââ¬Å"There remains then the man who occupies the mean between saintliness and depravity. He is not extra-ordinary in virtue and righteousness and yet does not fall into bad fortune because of evil and wickedness but because of some hamartia of a kind found in men of high reputation and good fortune such as Oedipus and Thyestes and famous men of similar families. â⬠Adade-Yeboah, et al (2012). The next part of a tragic heroââ¬â¢s role is that of recognition or discovery. This part includes the revelation of some prior unknown fact or element to bring to light the true identity of the main character. The revelation may be due to the actions of the main character or due to those of a minor character. They may already be known by the reader or the audience, thus making some of the choices the character makes almost painfully ignorant. Often times, once the revelation has been made, it leads to a reversal. A reversal is simply an action that has the opposite effect from the one intended. This reversal may be due in part to the tragic or fatal flaw of the protagonist. Kennedy (pages 856-858) Finally, there is the fear and pity that is aroused in the audience and / or reader. Even though most may feel like the main character deserved the end results, there is still a sense of pity or sorrow that they must suffer and hurt so much. Now that we have looked at the common requirements for a tragic hero, we will look at King Oedipus as the tragic hero. King Oedipus was worshiped by the people of Thebes. They saw him as wise and came to him to seek help and counsel when their city was suffering. He has freed them from the tyranny of the Sphinx and they were forever grateful. He even recognized his own greatness by referring to himself as the one who was called great by all men and calling the people of the city children. Oedipus (Prologue, Line 8) Through birth and adoption both, Oedipus was a nobleman. He has been left out in the wilderness by his other due to a prophecy that his father would die by the sonââ¬â¢s hand. He was then adopted by King Polybus of Corinth. Thus, he fulfilled the first requirement of the tragic hero ââ¬â being of noble birth or royal bloodlines. The next aspect of a tragic hero is one with a fatal or tragic flaw. Oedipus wanted to seek the truth regarding the murder of King Laius, believing that the truth would purge the city of the horrible curse that it was under. We see the king as one of high moral integrity, but subject to the normal frailties of the human being (Adade-Yeboah, et al (2012). He is portrayed as being somewhat short tempered and often rash due to his desire to do the right thing. This perhaps is his tragic flaw ââ¬â in his zeal to find the murdered, he makes rash statements about shunning the individual guilty of the murder, regardless of his standing in society (Oedipus). This brings us to the next aspect of the tragic hero ââ¬â the revelation. Through seeking the advice of a prophet, it is revealed to King Oedipus that he is the murderer ââ¬Å"You are the murdered of the king whose murderer you seek. Oedipus Initially, the king does believe that this is the case, but as he examines the evidence, it becomes clear that he is the guilty one. This revelation leads to the reversal in the kingââ¬â¢s life. In one moment, he realizes that his wife is his mother, that his children are his brothers and sisters and that all is lost for him. Then enter pity for the king. Not only does Oedipus find out that he is adopted, he also discovered that he killed his father, and had married his mother. He was truly sorrowful for the shame and anguish that the people of his city would suffer I grieve for you, my children. Believe me, I know all that you desire of me, all that you suffer; and while you suffer, none suffers more than I. â⬠Oedipus We feel even more pity for him when his wife and mother hangs herself and he puts his own eyes out ââ¬Å"He was called my king, but now whose tale is more miserable? â⬠Oedipus As Oedipus loses his throne, his thoughts are of those around him who he has hurt ââ¬â the people of Thebes and his children (who are also his brothers and sisters). He leaves them in the care of their uncle Creon. Before leaving them, he tells them how sorry he is ââ¬Å"For the unhappiness that must be yours: And for the bitter life that you must lead. Oedipus In conclusion, Oedipus has all of the criteria for a tragic hero. He is a nobleman, through choices and actions experienced a fall from greatness and his throne and aroused the pity of the reader and audience. Aristotle speaks of a tragic heroââ¬â¢s Harmatia or his tragic flaw being not one of moral roots, but rather one that is displayed through the choices and actions of the character. It is quite apparent that had Oedipus not killed his father, then the other events of marrying his mother, fathering his brothers and sisters, losing his site and his throne would not have come about. Although there is tragedy throughout this drama, one must applaud the nobleness and courage that Oedipus demonstrated by accepting responsibility for his actions and accepting the same consequences as he had previously deemed needed to purge the land of the curse. As a result of the fall of the king, the audience and reader is left with a feeling of relieve (catharsis) that the king gets what he deserves for killing his father. Although there is pity for all the heartache he has to endure, there is a sense of poetic justice that just because the ââ¬Å"heroâ⬠was of noble birth, he was not spared punishment. Character evolution through three scaffold scenes Essay -- essays rese
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804 (net). He attended Bowdoin College with famous writers such as Horatio Bridge and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (net). In 1850, Hawthorne published The Scarlet Letter (1222). It is considered by many that The Scarlet Letter, ââ¬Å"represents the height of Hawthorneââ¬â¢s literary genius. At this time, Boston was the center of a very Puritan society. Throughout the novel Hawthorne uses many symbols. For example, one prominent symbol is the scaffold. During this period in time, the scaffold was used for public humiliation. Those who had committed either a crime or a sin were forced to stand upon it in front of everybody in the town, as a form of confession or public recognition of oneââ¬â¢s sin. In The Scarlet Letter, the scaffold not only represents the act of confessing but it also can be seen as a symbol of the stern, inflexible doctrine of the Puritan faith. The Scarlet Letter is centered on the three scaffold scenes , which unite the work, beginning, middle, and end. Hawthorne uses these scenes to aid in his development of the main characters, Hester Pryne, the Reverend Mr. Dimmsdale, and to a lesser degree, Roger Chillingsworth. à à à à à In The Scarlet Letter, Reverend Dimmsdale commits the sin of adultery with Hester Pryne. As a result of this sinful act she bares a child which she names Pearl, the living evidence of their sin. The first scene takes place while Pearl is still an infant. Hester is made to ...

Personal Narrative- Defining Self Essay -- Personal Narrative, essay a
Who am I? Such a simple question: such a profoundly difficult one to answer. I could tell you that my name is Rob Jones, but that would only be my name. I could tell you that I would like to become a professional author and that I have strong linguistic skills and an artistic flair. But these are merely reflections of who I am: gifts I possess and talents I have perfected. I suppose I must start by telling you what I am. I am a human being. As such, I have several distinctive and inseparable parts. There is my physical side: namely my body with all its many tangible parts. This is not really me, though on this side of the great veil I couldn't survive without it. You may as well say that this body is merely a suit that houses the real me. But who is the real me? I have a second side to my being, a mental side that consists of intangible things such as my thoughts, feelings, emotions, knowledge, and wisdom-in short all the things that I have ever thought, experienced, known, or felt. Yes, this side relies on my physical side, my outer shell, to interface with the outer world. ...
Mysterious Statue of a Boy in the Park :: Free Descriptive Essay About A Place
As soon as I entered the park, I went looking for the statue of the little boy that I remembered so well from last summer. I knew it was on the south side of the park, but I was not sure exactly where. As soon as I began my quest, I could faintly smell roses, a smell so familiar from the endless warm summer days that Jordan and I would spend next to the rose garden, in front of the statue. I knew I was getting close. Next, I saw the roses in the distance from where I was, walking towards the stairs that lead to the rose garden. I remembered walking in the same general direction. I was closer. Then I got to the stairs. As I was walking down the steps I looked to my right. There was a statue of a beautiful woman, not the right statue. Finally, I looked to my left, and there it was. My heart skipped a beat. I could remember the very first time I saw that statue. It was a hot day in mid-July when Jordan and I first stumbled upon it. Last summer while I was living in the dorms, Jordan was my best friend; we spent every waking moment together. One day we decided to walk in the park, we got to the rose garden and were talking about the roses until we saw the little boy. We were both so amazed by the statue, yet we could not figure out why. Starting from that moment, we spent a great amount of time at the statue last summer. As I walked up to it, I could almost see Jordan standing next to the statue turning to say something about it to me that we had not noticed before, but that was last summer. Like I said, Jordan was a very close friend of mine, but when I moved back to Michiga n last year, we grew apart. Standing by the statue I could remember sitting next to it for hours just talking, and looking at the statue with him. The first thing I did was get up very close to the statue and examine it once again. It is of a boy who is between the ages of twelve and fifteen, he is mostly naked, covered only with a cloth hanging by a thin belt over his genitals. Analyse Diffrent Types of Business Information and Their Sources Their Essay
In Project LYD they use different forms of business information to communicate as a business, in this section of my work I am going to investigate the different types of business information that exists in the organisation that I am looking at. They are many different forms of business that will be used for project LYD for communication such as verbal communication, like meetings and conferences, written like emails, onscreen like presentations, multimedia like TV ads and films. And finally web based like facebook, MSN, and Twitter. All of these types of information are important to a project LYD as each one is used when different types of information. Verbal Verbal Verbal communication is further divided into written and oral communication. The oral communication refers to the spoken words in the communication process. Oral communication can either be face-to-face communication or a conversation over the phone or on the voice chat over the Internet. Spoken conversations or dialogs are influenced by voice modulation, pitch, volume and even the speed and clarity of speaking. Verbal communication would be a form of external information; this is because youââ¬â¢re gathering the customerââ¬â¢s feedback and what they think about your product. The purpose of verbal communication could have many advantages, for example in a meeting you could talk about the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. By doing this you are able to cover any concerns that you have with your product, and improve it. Oral communication describes any interaction that makes use of spoken words, and is very important in the business world. It is very important that this skill is done efficiently in a small business like Project LYD and the managers whom work form the business, who are the most likely ones to participate in this kind of communication as part of their job is to do the following: client/customer presentations, employee interviews, and conducting meetings. Another form of verbal communication that is becoming popular is the use of role play; this is when a group of people act out roles for a particular scenario. This is a good way to train your apprentices because you can get them to act out a certain scenario, this trains them by letting them so you as an employee what they have learned and what they have to offer. Role plays can be very time consuming however putting that aside its a very effective way of getting your message across to your audience, role plays are used extensively in organisations to train staff to deal with customers. Its a effective as it also gives the audience to try out new ideas and skills that have been discussed. The sources for verbal communication could be the interaction in customer services; this is because the staff member could communicate to the customers verbally by phone call. The staff member is able to advise to the customers who may be experiencing problems or have problems with the product, there are able to deal and resolve the problems that are faced. As well as this another source could be in sales, by phone call the sales team could attract customers into buying products that project LYD has to offer, even more so the door to door sales team could also use verbal communication to try and sell the products. It is very important for the sales team to have good verbal ability, this is because they are trying to to get the consumers to buy products of them, to do this successfully they have to attract them and get them interested in the product this all depends on how good their sales pitch is. Another department that might use this is the human resource department; they use verbal communication in training and development. They have to train the staff, verbal communication is very important in this circumstance as they have to teach the new staff members their job functions and role in the business. For example if the staff member was going to be trained for the call centre, the aspect of verbal communication will be crucial in this department. Written Written communication. Written communication consists of memos, reports, bulletins, job descriptions, employee manuals, electronic mail, Internet Web sites, letters, proposals, telegrams, faxes, postcards, contracts, advertisements, brochures, and news releases. The effectiveness of written communication depends on the style of writing, vocabulary used, grammar, clarity and precision of language. This can kind of communication is very effective for project LYD; this is because you can communicate with various people involved in the business for example this could be the employees, suppliers, or any body else involved in the company. Also you can send of emails to anybody who has joined your web site, informing them on recent offers of the company. Because project LYD is a relatively small business itââ¬â¢s important for them to develop effective written communication methods. This kind of communication is very wide spread and can consist of clients, vendors, and other members of the business community. They are many advantages of written communication, One advantage is that written messages do not have to be delivered on the spur of the moment; instead, they can be edited and revised several times before they are sent so that the content can be adjusted to the best it can be. Another advantage is that written communication provides a permanent record of the messages that have been sent and can be saved for later study. Since they are permanent, written forms of communication also enable recipients to take more time in reviewing the message and providing appropriate feedback. For these reasons, written forms of communication are often considered more appropriate for complex business messages that include important facts and figures. Written communication involves any type of interaction that makes use of the written word; written communication is common in everyday business situations, so it is important for small business owners and managers to develop effective written communication skills, to benefit their company. Even though we have seen a boom in technology over the recent years and the fact itââ¬â¢s likely to expand even more, written communication is still seen as being very important in a business. Writing ability is especially important in customer communication. Business proposals, status reports, customer documentation, technical support, or even e-mail replies all depend on clear written communication. A source of written communication could be in the human resources department, this is because they need to communicate to project LYDââ¬â¢s stakeholders this could include feedback to customers or to the companies suppliers this could involve orders to and from Project LYD. This could be done in various ways for example letters, emails and faxes, all of which have to have a good understanding and ability of written communication. Written communication is most influential to the finance department; this is because their role includes keeping records of the purchases and sales made by a business as well as capital spending. All of this acquires written communication the finance team also has to keep balance sheets for the company , Financial statements need to be produced at given time intervals, for example at the end of each financial year. Trial balances are extracted from the ledger entries to create a Balance Sheet showing the assets and liabilities for project LYD at the year end. Onscreen On screen communication. This type of communication includes power point presentations they are technically and visually designed, the advantages of this communication is that it is visually attractive to the eye. This type of communication is effective because its not all words, thereââ¬â¢s different elements in the presentation which benefits different types of learners, this is because it has pictures, words and verbal parts to the presentation. As well as this its not all spoken words, you can physically see it which some people prefer. Even more so because itââ¬â¢s not all spoken you are able to pay more attention for longer. This sort of communication can be used in project LYD to communicate with staff instead of going on for hours with words, this is more efficient way of communication as its keeping them involved and by doing this it grabs their attention. Multimedia presentations can be viewed in person on stage, projected, transmitted or played locally with a media player. The broadcasts that are seen can be either live or done with a media player. Broadcasts and recordings can be done by using both digital and analogue; digital online multimedia may be downloaded or streamed. A business presentation is normally done on a laptop and is then projected using a projector, this involves a variety of media including text, slides, photos, images, video, sounds, music and links to internet sites. Images can enhance on screen communication to an audience, this is because we are more likely to remember what we see than what we hear, so this means showing images can be the best way to help an audience remember the message that you are trying to put cross. On screen communication could be sourced to the Sales team, this is because when the Sales team goes to do presentations to schools for example they are able to interoperate their verbal communication into their on screen communication. Instead of just talking to the pupils they are able to excite them about the product by enhancing not just the verbal learners but the visual as well. Web based Web based communications is communication done over the internet, an example of this is on social networking sites. Because project LYD is aimed for people leaving school and college, because social networking sites are becoming more and more popular every year and significantly growing in numbers. The mean number of people who are using social network sites are in there late teens and early twenties, because project LYD is concentrating on people leaving education the social networking sites are a perfect place to communicate with the society. With a social networking site you can create a fan page and update it very easily offering information daily. Another way is to advertise on social networking sites is on the homepage, and offering a hyperlink directly to the web page. Onscreen communication could be handy for project LYD because it currently only staffs 10 employees, they could use this to their advantage. Another advantage of this is if youââ¬â¢re not a good speaker, this sort of communication comes in handy; all you have to do is click a button. Even more so onscreen communication allows the presenter to maintain eye contact with his audience and use his hands for emphasis. If youââ¬â¢re in a large hall with a large audience itââ¬â¢s hard to communicate with the audience singularly, an advantage of onscreen communication means the presentation can be projected onto a large screen for use in a large auditorium or lecture hall. Because of the internet companies are now able to have meeting even if the manager isnââ¬â¢t in the same building. Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings, training, or presentations via the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet. This can be either a downloaded application on each of the attendeesââ¬â¢ computers or a web-based application where the attendees access the meeting by clicking on a link distributed by e-mail (meeting invitation) to enter the conference. The tools on web based presentations means you are able to deliver an effective PowerPoint presentation to an internet connected audience, no matter were in the world they are at the time. An advantage of web based presentations is that you donââ¬â¢t have to worry if you have PowerPoint installed on your computer; this means you are able to deliver and produce these presentations. Because of the fast streaming broadband connections we have today, it means that it is possible to stream the content any were in the world. Because the internet has become very popular all the sources would find a way to interoperate it into their job roles, for example if you look at the customer service department the internet is very important in their job role. This is because they need to communicate over the internet for example by email, this way of communication is very quick and efficient thanks to the speed of the modern day broadband.

Is Science a Friend or an Enemy? Essay
Scientists, Change, Inventions, Einstein, Newton, Climate, Elements. . . . . . . . . Sounds SCIENCE right? Actually, all things here that we feel, see, hear, taste, and smell are related to it. It also maybe the cause of some or maybe the real cause of environmental, health, economical, industrial, and agricultural problems. So, many of us blame that technology which is the application of science destruct the Earth. YOU! Can you consider it as a friend or an enemy? For my very own opinion, SCIENCE is everyoneââ¬â¢s friend. Look on what you are holding, eating, breathing, and to your everyday companion. Add your Best friend forever if you have. He/she is a product of science right? The sperm cell of his/her dad fertilized the egg of his/her mother. Simply science! From kinder up to now that we are in high school, teachers are still trying their best to explain what SCIENCE really is. Itââ¬â¢s really becoming more complex but even it is that difficult to understand, this is the way for us to know and appreciate the word SCIENCE and of course its works. The only problem with us is we only look on the negative side of it. But if it is really your friend, even how many thousands of unsuccessful things it made, you will still accept it because it is really important to you and became part of your life for a long time. SCIENCE defines all things and really answers our confusing questions. We cannot deny that like a friend, It gives meaning to your life or should I say our lives. It plays important role in our human being. FOOD and WATER are part of science and also part of our lives. Now, you are insisting that science is an enemy? Woaah! Think of it for a while. You cannot achieve what you are right now without the help of science. YES, maybe itââ¬â¢s dangerous sometimes but you canââ¬â¢t curse it nor wish that it should be gone forever. Science also helped us to know or have an overview from our past. They studied it for us to know the livelihood of our ancestors. With the help of the historiansââ¬â¢ curiosity, they investigated every little informations from it. Thanks to them because now, weââ¬â¢re improving the works of our forefather. Latest inventions, gadgets and technologies! Some people who are narrow-minded, (for me) considered it as a way for destructing ourà environment. For me, it is NOT that really. Actually these things will be the way for our livelihood to progress. Some people think that it is a bad idea to invent new things because for me again, because they cannot just handle it well. It will be so much helpful for us like in the aspects of communication, transportation and etc. it will be easier to stay connected and close with our loved ones or even enemies in times that we missed them so much and wish that they were here beside us. We can go faster to places where we wanna go and it could be less tiring for us. Merely, we should have enough knowledge to handle things with care because we are also the one and not the machineries or technology that will make destroy our environment. Inventors will not invent things if they know that it is not for our own good. Theyââ¬â¢re aim is for us to use it but not to abuse it. In predicting some phenomenon such as typhoon, volcanic eruptions, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Service Administration (PAG-ASA) and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology are there to take charge of it. They made it easy for us to know whatââ¬â¢s happening here in Earth. And with the help of our televisions, radios, and cell phones, we can know the news quickly and easily. This is very useful to us because we can know when to evacuate to a safer place and to keep ourselves ready! Science is our friend in the field of Medicine and in the aspect of health. When we are sick, it has the solution for us. It can detect what our illness is and what kind of cure will be applied to it. Because of the experiments and tests the scientists are making, we are able to extend our lives and our loved ones lives. The herbal medicines were to improve for an easier way for us to chew, drink, or apply it directly. This can lessen our time in boiling, squeezing or preparing such herbal leaves. SCIENTIFIC METHOD ââ¬â principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation of hypotheses. This method is used in our daily lives ââ¬â because problem does not choose whom it will attack. We can know the solution/answer when we use scientific method. And also, this helps us to decide properly on things soà that we will not be confused on it. It leads our curious minds to its needed answers. Because science is KNOWLEDGE! And this would help us to progress. SCIENCE is our amigo, chum, pal, buddy, or simply FRIEND. Without it like a friend, is like a year without rain or sun.
